The body manufactures most synthetic steroids from the natural compound cholesterol. Even though we know cholesterol as a fat, most steroids have the same molecular arrangement as cholesterol. All steroids have three-six-sided carbon rings attached to one-five-sided ring. It’s just a matter of taking cholesterol and tweaking it by adding or removing a few atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, to make the various steroids.

Even though the ancient Greeks and Romans new that the male testes contained compounds that made men more muscular and aggressive than women, it would be the 1920’s before steroids hormones such as testosterone would be first isolated.
