Light weight lifting?

i keep hearing that if i lift weight lighter than what i am used to it will help my muscles look more ripped or defined, is this true?
i dont understand how lifting weights which have less resistence can help my muscles look more defined.
im about 5'8'' weight is 185

whatever the answer is plz give me as much info on the subject as possible i have been meaning to solve this question for awhile now. thx
